How To Visit The Colosseum

Ever since I was a wide-eyed youngster watching Lizzie McGuire scooter around Rome with her Italian singing hunk, I was fully devoted to one day visiting one of the most photographed landmarks of all time. But getting there, was quite the catastrophe. So, because I somehow wrangled my way through the jungle of the Internet and found information on arriving at the Colosseum, I wanted to share with you on how to do so as well!

To start off, for some reason, every single Italian website that remotely deals with sightseeing and tourism won’t be clearly labeled as the official location for purchasing tickets. What’s worse, is that unofficial sites appear as though they are official. Some real Wolf of Wall Street action going on here let me tell you. Here is the actual official site for reserving/booking Colosseum tickets. You’re welcome.

Onto the next topic, which is the question I’m sure you’re asking yourself right now: should I even buy tickets in advance if I have a whole day and don’t really want to deal with the hassle of booking online? Yes. Choose the road that should be travelled far more often, and buy your tickets in advance. You just choose a day and are given the freedom of entering the Colosseum whenever makes sense for you in your itinerary.

Did you overhear someone saying that the Pope was in the house while you were touring the Vatican? Your hot waiter winked at you and now you’re questioning staying longer? Took a picture in front of the Trevy Fountain but didn’t like it and now aren’t sure if you can risk retaking it? Go find the Pope! Order another pizza at that restaurant! And gosh darn it, go take another photo because you know you’ll be hating yourself once those Instagram filters can’t seem to make you look better no matter how hard you try. You’ll be able to relax throughout your day knowing that you’re in no rush to get in touch with your inner Roman Empire.

And what’s the best part about booking in advance? NO LINES. Well, I mean, besides the security check, but aside from that, you’ll wait in zero lines. Yes. You heard me. Instead of standing in the blistering heat, you’ll be walking in the scorching hot air. Go you for being ahead of the game! And this blog post goes for every other tourist location in Europe. If you’ve heard of it on TV or Instagram, it will have lines, and you will hate yourself, so please, for your sake, book online and save some time. I think that’s a tagline for a commercial I once heard. I hope it’s not trademarked…

One last note on the Colosseum: there are options for you to book audio guide tours and even private tours that take you deeper into the infrastructure than what the general visitors are allowed to see with their regular tickets. These tours are vastly more in-depth and insightful, and I highly recommend investigating your options because how else are you going to impress your friends, right? Just throw down some ancient Roman history at your next get together and I’m sure everyone around you will be speechless, and may or may not walk away from you but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.
