Poffertjes in Amsterdam
Do you remember a couple of years ago when Pancake Puffs were all the rave? Okay, maybe not that popular, but in my book, they were one of the greatest inventions to grace our good planet. They really weren’t even good, most of the time they turned out undercooked or burnt, but how cool is it to eat a pancake in spherical form??
Really cool. I’ll tell you that. I don’t care how bad they were, they were cool. So think of Poffertjes just like that. Really cool. They’re basically a traditional Dutch batter treat, essentially in the same circular form as Pancake Puffs, but better. Much better.
I was raised in a very traditional Polish household, and was never really a fan of pancakes, but these don’t even taste like regular old pancakes. They have a much lighter and spongier texture, much more delicate than your regular old IHOP (sorry IHOP).
They’re normally served with powdered sugar, but you can also get creative with your toppings, as most restaurants and stands give you the ability to do so. I opted for the less traditional (but still delicious) side toppings, however, I did enjoy these with just regular powdered sugar as well. I ended up savoring mine at a cute little restaurant called ‘Carousel Pancake House’ and it was by far the best place I have eaten in all of the Netherlands (so far).
Both the pancakes and poffertjes were to die for, the staff was incredibly helpful, and the amount of choices offered will leave you dizzier than the cute carousel spinning in the middle of the restaurant. Regardless of where you end up eating them, make these a #1 priority on your list of things to try in Amsterdam (right behind Herring and Heineken, of course).
