Sugary Belgian Waffles

Talk about BelgYUM. This was by far one of the most spiritual epiphanies I’ve ever had when trying to satisfy my sweet tooth. Belgium is particularly famous for its waffles, and let me tell you, they’re not overrated enough.

With a sweet dessert-like base, a little bit of glazed sugar giving it that much needed crunch, and topped off with a blanket of powdered sugar, this filling treat will surely leave you craving more. It will also leave a coat of sugar all over your possessions, but it’s a risk you must be willing to take to enjoy one of the tastiest meals known to mankind (and yes, I mean meals because I guarantee you will be getting more than one once you get a taste).

There are two different forms of waffles you can try out for yourself: either the Liege Waffles or the Regular Belgian Waffles. The Liege Waffles are thick and doughy and have sugar baked into them, making them extra sweet and tasty, while the Regular Waffles are thin and more delicate versions of a regular waffle. I highly recommend the Liege waffles if you’re a sugar fiend like myself looking for something that’ll hit that sweet spot.

Everywhere you turn your head, there will be little waffle shops scattered around the touristy streets of Brussels, but please, for all that is good in the world do not buy your waffles from them. They’re not the yummiest, and you will be slightly disappointed at the lack of satisfaction you receive from them. After trying out a couple different hot spots around the old town, my absolute favorite waffles were produced by Maison Dandoy. At a whopping €2,50 (sense the sarcasm) these blew the competition straight out of the water for me.

If you’re looking for a slightly cheaper but almost as good location, I would hit up Le Funambule which charges only €1,00 for its desserts. Whichever location you try out, I can assure you it’s totally worth it, and will have you offering your first born for another bite of waffle the second you smell any form of sugared goodness on the streets.

P.S. Resist the urge to load up your waffles with 30 different toppings. Do as the locals do and take your waffle with a plain powdered sugar coating. The simpler they are the better, I promise.
