Top 10 Things To Do In Luzern Switzerland
There’s something to be said about fairytale destinations. I for one, don’t seriously believe in them, but boy was my world rocked when I arrived in Luzern, Switzerland. This is definitely a country that is filled to the brim with stunning scenery and speckled with gems waiting to be discovered. You seriously can’t go wrong visiting any single town in the entire country. Unfortunately for me, I was only able to visit one of these glorious paradise cities, but hopefully (definitely) one day I’ll be back.
1. Water Tower
Standing tall and proud as the most popular landmark in all of Luzern, this tower is completely surrounded by shimmering turquoise waters. Found in the city center (and every postcard you lay your eyes on) it’s difficult to miss, especially since most sight seeing locations are placed around the river.
2. Chapel Bridge
Right next to the water tower, you will find one of the longest covered wooden bridges in all of Europe. Adorned with white flowers, it really has the capability of making you feel as though you’re in a new medieval world. It’s a great place to take a romantic walk, unless you’re unlovable like me, then it perfectly pairs with a nice hardy bar of Swiss chocolate.
3. Jesuit Church
When I first visited this church I was deliberately angry. To be fair, it was closed, and there was nothing that screamed ‘amazing’ on the outside. But a second trip proved me wrong, and I realized the true beauty that decorates every pillar, ceiling, and window inside this massive infrastructure. Sounds like me. Ugly on the outside, gorgeous on the inside. Hah I'm kidding. Not really. Maybe.
4. Old Town
Getting lost among these old streets will pleasantly surprise you. There’s several little landmarks and buildings that’ll make you stare in awe, and ultimately take up more storage space on your phone, but I guess I can’t complain about that one.
5. Lion Monument
Quite a trek outside of Old Town (and by trek I mean casual walk or two-second shuttle ride because I’m just lazy and unwilling to walk long distances when I’m tired), there’s the famous Luzern Dying Lion Monument. It’s definitely one of the bigger tourist locations in the town, but has an incredibly interesting history which is worth checking out.
6. The 9 Towers
This massive wall is an interesting way to spend a couple of hours of your life. Running along the city, this 13th century wall is surrounded by homes, cows, alpacas, and wonderful views from the towers themselves. However, be warned that you can only climb 4 of these towers, and personally, not worth the 5 flights of stairs for subpar views, but that can be up to you to decide.
7. Gutch Hotel/Castle
I’ll be honest, this wasn’t on my itinerary whatsoever, but it quickly turned into one of my favorite adventures throughout the entire trip. It’s an overpriced hotel and restaurant that was created in the likeness of the Neuschwanstein Castle located in Germany. Despite how pretty the actual structure is, the forest and easy hikes located right behind it are far more worth spending your time on and surprisingly enjoyable - especially if you've been in the heat all day.
8. Sit Riverside
I’ve been raving about these pretty waters that stream in from the lake beside the town throughout this entire post, so it’s a no brainer that this would be on my top 10 list of things to do. Grab some savory Swiss cheese or maybe a bit (pounds) of the world's best chocolate and enjoy a sunset sitting alongside the water.
9. Needle Dam
This one isn’t as exciting as the rest, but it’s important to the town, river, and lake itself, so I’m going to label it as an integral part of your plans as well. Located laughably close to the water tower and chapel bridge (you can literally see them in the photo), you’ll find water gushing through it. The colors alone are enough to mesmerize even the teeniest of attention spans like mine.
10. Mount Pilatus
By far the most important place to visit when in Luzern. Because it’s not technically a part of the town, I couldn’t add it to this list, however, it’s literally right there and easily accessible from any part of the town, plus it showcases some of the best views and outlooks that I’ve ever seen.
