Top 5 Things To Do In Heidelberg
Heidelberg or heaven??? A question that seriously keeps me up at night. This quaint town has an eternal grip on my heart. The beauty, the elegance, the poise (and I'm not just talking about me) will leave you oozing with appreciation for this national treasure.
1. Heidelberg Castle
This dominant giant is basically like the eyes of Mona Lisa – following you wherever you turn. You can be on the outside of Old Town, or dipping through the colorful alleyways within the city itself, and you can still be sure to see it almost anywhere you go. But don’t skip out on visiting the castle itself! Hidden inside of these stony walls, you’ll find plenty of apothecary history and the world’s largest wine barrel. You can also be certain that you’ll stumble on some of the most breathtaking views found in all of Germany.
2. Old Bridge and Bridge Monkey
Riddled with history and folklore, this bridge not only provides gorgeous views of the castle and old town, but also attracts plenty of tourists with its bountiful tall-tales and hidden secrets. I don’t want to spoil any, but legend has it that if you touch the mirror, you’ll receive money; rubbing the monkeys fingers will ensure your return to Heidelberg; and grazing your fingers over the bronze mice around the monkeys feet will provide you with fertility. Check it out for yourself!
3. Shop on Main Street
I’ve never been so overwhelmed by shops in my life. This doesn’t mean that this is the most I’ve ever seen, and it was probably my lack of water in 90 degree weather, but these shops blew me away. Mainly because the vastness of this main strip is beyond what I would’ve imagined in a town so close to the castle and thriving with culture and history. Who knew? You can also turn off of this road and make your way up the hill to the castle, so be on the lookout for signs to get you there!
4. Walk Around Small Alleys
I know everyone always claims that you should ~get lost~ and ~find secret places~ in touristy towns, but this one is actually legit. I didn’t actually like Heidelberg all that much until I found myself completely and utterly lost trying to find my way back to the main strip with faulty wifi, all the while being surrounded by quaint little German houses. Do it. Just do it.
5. Eat Local Cuisine
I guess this one also goes without saying when you’re in Germany, or in any foreign country for that matter, but Heidelberg is no exception to this rule. There’s plenty of cute little shops that offer incredible meals for a decent price. Try to sit outside – if the weather allows. This lets you to not only people watch, but also take in the local scenery that you don’t often find in other tourist hotspots.
