Why You Should Visit Schwetzingen Germany
There are few places that I would deliberately visit time and time again. Schwetzingen is sincerely one of these gems. The only reason I even went was because my roommates had badgered me into going, telling me it was ‘so pretty’ and ‘better than Heidelberg’. Complying, I found myself at the gates of a stoic orange tinted palace. Did I know anything about this place? No. But I was sure as hell that this was going to leave a searing lasting memory in my mind.
Stepping through the palace and into the leafy gardens, I was beyond stupefied at how glamorous this hidden secret truly was. Not too far from Frankfurt, it’s an absolute must see if you’re interested in having your mind blown up into pieces by the vast artistry these gardens contain. When I first entered, there was a massive map placed on the side for visitors to determine where, in this mysterious fairy-tale garden, they would like to go first. I simply just glanced at it, my eyes tracing over the dips and turns of the greens and blues, occasionally being interrupted by a landmark or two. Unfazed, I trekked on.
Walking through the gardens during a brisk autumn morning is enough to send shivers down your spine. You’ll be carried throughout by the trace of colorful flowers, not yet succumbing to bitter death, that dot the perimeter around you. The gravel beneath your feet crunches with every step you take, making this journey slightly more eerie than first imagined.
As I strolled through, I was overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the amount of work and tireless effort and upkeep that must have gone into developing and maintaining the complexity of this place. After finding a random sculpture, I followed a barely touched trail behind, out of pure curiosity. After a couple sharp turns, I stumbled my way into a courtyard, flourishing with trees that reached high above me and into the cloudy sky above. And that’s when it finally hit me: this place is a whole other world.
It was like stepping into Narnia. Not that Narnia resembles these gardens in the slightest, but you get what I mean. It was an entire new universe, filled with exquisite foliage and some of the most delicate and tasteful architecture I have seen in all of Europe. Even just the simplicity of color choices that brighten the setting all around you will leave a sparkling impression on your heart. It’s unlike any other palace I’ve visited throughout my time in Europe, much more delicate and yet forceful all at the same time, a game-changer in how I view antique castles and gardens.
